CHICAGO, 03/13/01 —
The Clementine data mining workbench topped the latest KDnuggets poll , which asked respondents to name the Web mining tools they use. Of the nine specific tools mentioned, Clementine from SPSS Inc. (Nasdaq: SPSS) received the largest number of votes with 21 percent of participants replying that it is their Web mining tool of choice. Clementine finished four percentage points ahead of the second place product.
The Web mining poll was conducted on the KDnuggets Web site from Jan. 16 to Feb. 2 and the results were published in the Feb. 7 KDnuggets News e-newsletter. KDnuggets is the leading source of information on data mining, Web mining, knowledge discovery and decision support topics. Complete results of the poll can be found on the KDnuggets Web site at www.kdnuggets.com/polls/web-mining.htm.
Clementine 6.0, released in December, includes the Web mining Clementine Application Template (CAT)—a collection of models, sample data and guides specifically designed to help organizations run successful Web mining projects.
“This survey confirms that Clementine was leading the Web mining market even before the release of version 6.0 with its Web-specific features,” said Peter Caron, SPSS senior marketing manager. “Our creation of the Web mining CAT is a direct response to the growing use of Clementine to analyze Web data. This template —which encapsulates our experience helping organizations get the most out of their Web data—gives Clementine customers a major jump-start on their Web mining projects.”
Clementine takes a visual, interactive approach to data mining. Users build a map of their data mining project—called a “stream”—by selecting icons that represent steps in the process. Because the process is visual, data mining with Clementine is more accessible and users can add business knowledge for better results.
To help ensure successful and productive data mining projects, Clementine includes CATs—collections of streams, sample data and documentation commonly used in specific applications. Clementine 6.0 is the first version to offer a Web mining application template. Version 6.0 also includes a data mapping tool to aid users in applying CATs to their own data.
With its first place finish in the February Web mining poll, Clementine continues its unbeaten streak in KDnuggets Web and data mining tools polls. KDnuggets has conducted four Web and data mining tools surveys since March 2000 and Clementine finished first or tied for first in all of them. The June 13 KDnuggets News named Clementine the most popular data mining software, a poll published in the July 18 KDnuggets News listed Clementine tied for first place as the data mining software respondents planned to try or buy next, and the Nov. 7 KDnuggets News reported that Clementine finished first in a survey that asked respondents to name the data mining tool they used regularly. AnswerTree, another SPSS data mining tool, finished second in the Nov. 7 poll.
