Latest Version of SPSS Data Mining Workbench Enhances Integration With Business Solutions

Clementine® 8.0 Enables Real-time Web Deployment and Streamlined Data Preparation

CHICAGO, 10/06/03

SPSS Inc., the leading provider of predictive analytics software and solutions, today announced the immediate availability of Clementine® 8.0, the latest version of its widely used data mining workbench. Building on Clementine’s pioneering visual process workflow, this latest release continues the SPSS heritage of analytic innovation and commitment to an open, standards-based approach. The new features of Clementine 8.0 are based on extensive end-user feedback, introducing new capabilities for increasing productivity and deploying interactive models online.

"Clementine has always had the challenges of the modern business world in mind," said Colin Shearer, vice president, customer analytics business center at SPSS. "Version 8.0 was built to seamlessly integrate with other business processes and systems in order to provide decision-makers with both a complete view of current conditions while shedding light on future events."

As part of the Clementine 8.0 launch, SPSS is also introducing Cleo™ 2.5, a new, XML-based offering for rapidly deploying predictive models online. The Cleo deployment environment enables multiple users to simultaneously access Clementine scoring models through a simple, customizable browser-based interface. This allows business users to immediately score single records, multiple records, or an entire database on an ad hoc basis.

The Richmond, Virginia Police Department's criminal analysis group relies on Clementine's intuitive, visual data mining process to analyze local crime data. Finding patterns and relationships in raw crime data allows the department to characterize and predict violent crime as well as confidently connect seemingly random, independent incidents. Then using Cleo, operational police personnel can access these predictive models in real-time over the Department's intranet. Front-line personnel, such as detectives, can make potentially life-saving decisions by receiving immediate predictive analytic results via Cleo's simple Web-based prompts and pull down menus.

"Law enforcement and public safety are 24/7 endeavors, and crime frequently occurs when analytical units are not on duty," says Colleen McCue, Ph.D, program manager, crime analysis unit, Richmond Police Department. "Web-based analytics, like Cleo, enable law enforcement organizations to fully exploit their analytical capacity when and where it is needed, while keeping operational personnel on the streets and fighting crime."

Standards-based, Open Architecture Powers In-database Mining

First introduced in 1999, Clementine's open in-database mining functionality allows many data mining functions to be performed within database environments. Clementine 8.0 extends in-database mining to include model scoring and bulk data loading, further leveraging the database's underlying performance and management capabilities. Because this capability is SQL-based, SPSS in-database mining is portable across major databases and significantly reduces data movement.

Leveraging Clementine's open systems approach within their CRM environment, Orange Communications PLC, a leading European wireless service provider in Europe, relies on SPSS predictive analytics to improve marketing campaign effectiveness while reducing customer churn. The wireless provider uses the SPSS Clementine Application Template (CAT) for telecommunications, a pre-built data mining module designed specifically to address telecommunications industry business problems such as customer retention and cross-selling. CATs are also available for general CRM, fraud detection, microarray analysis (bioinformatics) and Web mining.

"Due to Clementine's standards-based architecture, my team has been able to leverage the data coming out of our operational CRM system," said Hatem Labben, Orange Communications' manager of customer relationship management. "Clementine provides the analytical power we need to leverage the data coming out of our operational CRM system, and turns it into the historical and predictive intelligence needed to retain and enhance our customer relationships."

New, Practical Features Improve Productivity

Clementine 8.0 introduces several unique features that significantly impact productivity and overall efficiency of typically resource-constrained data analysts. Large, complex data sets can be visually assessed and profiled using the data audit node, effectively reducing the number of required data exploration steps by several orders of magnitude. A streamlined data reclassification interface allows values to be rapidly condensed into smaller, more analytically useful groups. Continuing Clementine's history of advanced visualization innovations, the new cluster viewer provides a rich, intuitive visual summary of discovered clusters, allowing general business users to rapidly understand the defining characteristics of each cluster.

"I have gigabytes of data that lack data integrity, quality and organization," says Pam Robbins, an associate at Booz Allen and Hamilton, a global management and technology-consulting firm. "The new features in Clementine will save me a tremendous amount of data preparation time. My projects will particularly benefit from the data audit node, new database join, and bulk loading capabilities."

Availability
Clementine 8.0 is available immediately, with pricing starting at $75,000. Cleo 2.5 will be available in November 2003, with pricing starting at $100,000. For additional information, please visit www.spss.com or contact SPSS sales at [email protected] or 1-800-543-2185.

Clementine 8.0 integrates with SPSS® 12.0 for Windows®, the company's core statistical analysis software, and Answer Tree™, an analytic tool that uses scalable decision trees to reveal segments and predict how groups will respond. Clementine is also an integral component of Predictive Web Analytics™, a unique solution that combines Clementine with the SPSS NetGenesis™ Web analytics package to transform Web data into deeper customer intelligence.
