Spreadsheets don't have the power, flexibility and wide range of quantifiable information people need. But tools like SPSS do.

As the demand for strategic decision making increases, so does the need for statistics and software like PASW Statistics, according to Jaap Vink, quantitative information consultant, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu International.

“I see more people moving from basic to advanced analysis,” said Vink, whose number of clients using technology and in-depth statistical analysis grew more than 30 percent last year. “Spreadsheets don't have the power, flexibility and wide range of quantifiable information people need. But tools like PASW Statistics do.”

Vink uses PASW Statistics two ways. At Deloitte Touche's Computer Assurance Services Center (CASC) in Holland, he performs statistical analysis—often for auditors—with PASW Statistics. At client sites, Vink implements statistics-based quantitative information applications. In both cases, the goal is “to improve the quality of information for increased efficiency using sampling and statistical methods.”

Vink described how one company, now using PASW Statistics, no longer halts production lines for annual inventories. Instead, the company uses PASW Statistics to set up sampling schemes and analytical models.

“With the time and money saved by keeping production running, PASW Statistics will quickly pay for itself. Then, savings is sheer profit.”

PASW Statistics is good for data mining, Vink said, because it analyzes information independently from a company's database. “There's little danger of damaging or losing information.”

PASW Statistics is also essential to Vink for creating custom applications. He has used the SPSS Developer's Kit “as a core statistical motor” for companies in the manufacturing and retail industries.

Vink first worked with PASW Statistics at his university; the program’s strong statistical analysis capabilities reflecting technological advances have kept him with it. Vink added: “In any situation with quantitative data, you can benefit by using PASW Statistics.”
