Creating Text Analysis Packages

Searching for a way to easily reuse linguistic resources and categories on future data? With SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys 3.0, you can create, share, and reuse Text Analysis Packages (TAPs), which contain linguistic resources in a resource template, and also one or more category sets. The advantage of using a TAP is that much of the categorization will occur at the same time as the terms are extracted, rather than in a subsequent step. SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys offers several pre-built TAP files for customer, employee, and product satisfaction surveys—or you can create your own TAPs. TAPS are only available in the English-language version of the software. All TAPs created with SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys can be used in the latest version of Text Mining for Clementine, and vice versa.

To build your TAP:

Launch the Project Wizard and select Category and Resources. You will be asked whether or not you want to select a TAP (see Figure 1 below).

Figure 1: Select categories and resources from the Project Wizard.

After selecting the TAP you prefer, decide whether you want to include any pre-built category sets. You can choose a category set for each text variable. This example uses the Customer Survey Package.

Click the Choose package drop-down and select Customer Survey Package, as shown below in Figure 2.

By default, no category sets are selected. Use the Category Set drop-down list to select the one you want. This particular TAP contains three category sets: positive opinions, negative opinions, or both. In this example, click the Category Set drop-down list and choose "Positive Opinions."

Click the Finish button at the bottom of the screen to begin the text extraction process:

Once the text extraction process is complete, you will see the extracted terms and responses—as well as the resulting categories—in the upper left hand window (as shown in Figure 4 below).
